Bloomberg agency reports that the Administration of US President Joe Biden has supported a bill that will allow confiscating ca. 300 billion USD from frozen russian assets, followed by remittance of such funds to reconstruction of Ukraine.
The US National Security Council sent a letter to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee stating that in general the White House welcomes the Rebuilding Economic Prosperity and Opportunity (REPO) for Ukrainians Act.
The step has the support of 14 senators from both parties and 62 members of the House of Representatives. The US State Department notes that it has been holding consultations with G7 partners and studying all legal options to help Ukraine receive reimbursement from the russian federation.
The bill requires Biden to coordinate with the G7 countries, but does not require their approval, which could give the USA an opportunity to act unilaterally.
The document also contains wording designed to prevent russia from challenging the arrest in American courts.
Bloomberg notes, “Biden’s support for this step arose on the grounds of the fact that Republicans in Congress blocked the allocation of over 60 billion USD for Ukraine”. We remind that frozen russian assets abroad make up nearly 300 billion USD. Volodymyr Zelenskyi said that all funds should be used to support Ukraine, which would become a historic chance to make the terrorist country pay for its evil.
